The Australian Government will assume ownership and responsibility of all waste stored at the facility.
It will be subject to the strictest regulatory oversight by our national independent regulators including the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency and independent inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
It is expected that the facility would be operational or open for 100 years. The planned footprint of the facility of around 40 hectares is sufficient to accept all of Australia’s low-level radioactive waste over this time based on projected activity levels.
The bulk of the low level waste will decay within 100 years. However some of the material will have longer half-lives and may take 200-300 years to fully decay. Once the facility is closed and no longer receiving waste it will be remediated with ongoing monitoring for a period of about 200 to 300 years.
