On Tuesday 17 July a workshop will be held for contractors and construction businesses to learn about commercial opportunities at a National Radioactive Waste Management Facility.
The event is being held by the Kimba Economic Working Group and attended by various experts in addition to the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science.
The Group’s objective is to help contractors and small to medium-sized businesses prepare for construction of the Facility, should the Facility proceed at either of the Kimba sites.
Three sites, including two in Kimba, are being considered for a Facility where radioactive waste, currently spread over more than 100 Australian locations, will be consolidated and safely managed.
Technical studies have now been completed at all three sites and in-depth community consultation will be ongoing until the conclusion of a community ballot in September 2018.
As part of this consultation, Economic Working Groups have been established to investigate the opportunities that would come with a Facility of this type, and share them with the local community.
Bruce Wilson, Principal Advisor to the National Radioactive Waste Management Taskforce, said the workshop is being hosted at the request of the Groups.
"The Department was approached to assist with the organisation of these events, which will provide advice for contractors and businesses," Mr Wilson said.
"At the event, contractors will learn how they could link in with Tier 1 construction companies, what kinds of work packages can be expected and what workforce skills will be needed.
"Importantly, businesses will also gain an understanding of what Vocational Education Training qualifications are required to meet construction standards.
"It takes time to reskill or upskill workers so they have the right capabilities and competencies, and this workshop will give prospective contractors guidance on the timelines and objectives.
"A compliance specialist will also explain how businesses can position themselves as subcontractors of choice to the Tier 1 firms by satisfying insurance and work health and safety requirements.
"The Economic Working Group is seeking to ensure that local businesses are ready so that economic and employment opportunities from the Facility could be maximised locally."
