Applications open for up to $4 million in community grants for Barndioota and Kimba communities

APPLICATIONS open today for two community benefit packages worth up to $2 million each for the Barndioota and Kimba regions of South Australia.

Senator the Hon Matt Canavan, Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, today released the guidelines for the applications.

“The Community Benefit Programme provides funding for projects that will deliver social or economic benefits for the communities located near sites being considered for the National Radioactive Waste Management Facility,” Minister Canavan said.

“The programme recognises the community’s contribution and short-term disruption as the detailed consultation and technical assessments are underway.

“This is the second year of the programme being available in Barndioota and the first in Kimba.”

Minister Canavan said the programme opens to applications today and closes at 5pm AEDT on Monday 5 February 2018.

“Applications will be assessed by AusIndustry and community committees to ensure they deliver social and economic outcomes, against criteria specified in the guidelines. These include:

  • the capacity and capability to carry out the project;
  • the benefit to the community the project will achieve; and
  • the value for money offered by the project.

“The grants program is designed to deliver benefits and offset inconvenience during the consultation,” he said.

“There is a wide range of possibilities for these projects, but delivering long-lasting benefits to the local area is the primary objective.

“In 2017, 11 projects were funded, including refurbishment of the Hawker Institute, delivery of new equipment for movie nights, and infrastructure and housing upgrades at Yappala Station,” Minister Canavan said.

He added that staff at the local project offices in Hawker and Kimba – plus representatives from AusIndustry – would be available to assist community members and local businesses through the application process.

Note: To be eligible for funding, projects should benefit communities that are in the District Council of Kimba area, or within 50km of Barndioota, plus the remainder of the Flinders Ranges Council area.
